So, you’re tired of cleaning your gutters. No one can really blame you for that. It’s a hard job, unless you call someone and have them do the work for you. And, in that case, finding a company that is good and reputable can also be hard work. But, if you’re like me, you’re looking for an easier way. A commercial comes on television for gutter covers and suddenly that seems like the perfect solution. No maintenance, no extra work, you don’t even have to worry about it. Or, do you?

There are four main types of gutter covers: plastic covers, metal mesh covers, metal grate covers and the solid metal covers that allow water to flow over the edge of the cover. So we’ll go through a brief explanation of the different covers and go through the advantages and disadvantages of each system.

First, the plastic covers. These covers are easy to find in Home Depot and Lowes, and they’re usually on sale for a reason. So, we’ve all seen the solid metal covers on television with the rounded edge that just allows the water to flow over the top and into the gutters. They are streamlined and appear very attractive in all of the ads. I know I was tempted. But, do they work? Yes and no. Again still needing to clean the debris from the roof will always be an issue. Also, even though there is just that tiny slot that keeps out the leaves, the pine straw can still get into that area and clog up the gutters. And, trying to fish pine straw out of that tiny slot is not nearly as much fun as it sounds.

And finally, the metal grate covers. These are probably the best system that you can purchase for your home. They are expensive and they don’t really add any value to your home, so to make them cost effective you should be planning to stay in your home for the next five to seven years. You do still need to remove the debris from your roof, but these covers do effectively keep the pine straw and all of the leaves out of your gutters.
